Hundreds of schools, councils, businesses and organisations around Australia are gearing up for White Balloon Day 2013 to show their support in raising awareness and helping Bravehearts to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.

Supporters wear white on the day to show support for victims of child sexual assault and to generate awareness about the issue.

Bravehearts is calling for volunteers, fundraising dynamos and event hosts with the most.

White Balloon Day is not only a day of recognition, awareness and support, it’s also the principle fundraising initiative for Bravehearts as it seeks to educate, empower and protect the most vulnerable members of the community – our kids.

The Australia-wide event is a key fixture during National Child Protection Week with all funds raised going toward education, prevention and counselling programs.

Government research shows 1 in 5 Australian children will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday – or 59,000 annually. Equally as alarming is the fact that in 85 per cent of cases, the offender is known to the child and is a relative or a trusted friend.

'WINDOWS TECHNICAL SUPPORT' TELEMARKETING SCAM

Posted: 15 Jul 2013 01:20 AM PDT As the line in ‘The Poltergeist’ goes … they’re baaack! The telemarketing scam with callers, generally from India, claiming to work at a ‘Windows Technical Support Centre’ and that your computer has sent them a virus warning.  They will then ask you to open a screen on your computer, showing background text scripting of an error or virus warning.  The displayed text is part of the computer’s operating system, not a sign of a virus infection. The operator will try to sell you a ‘fix’ for the problem (getting your credit card details and selling you a virus program) or try to get ‘remote access’ to your computer (allowing them to install the virus program in your computer). A major international ‘Windows Technical Support’ scam was closed down in October 2012, with the assistance of Australian law enforcement agencies.     Microsoft (the makers of the Windows system) does not call users unless a person has logged a service request. They have published information on their website athttp://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx. The Australian Government ‘Scamwatchers’ website has more information on these types of scams at http://www.scamwatch.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/792165. If you receive a call of this type, hang up.  Do not give them any information or allow remote access to your computer. Break and enters, South East Queensland

Police investigating a series of break and enters at businesses across the South East in recent weeks have released CCTV images of a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries.
On June 30, a black 2005 Nissan Nivara was stolen from a service station on Halpine Drive at Mango Hill.
Police believe the offenders who stole the vehicle may be involved in numerous burglaries at coffee shops, ice cream stores, pizza businesses and a pet shop on the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane between June 19 and July 9.
Officers would like to speak to the man pictured in the CCTV footage recorded at the Mango Hill service station on June 30.
He is described as being Caucasian in appearance with a slim build, brown hair and distinctive tattoo on his right ankle.
Anyone who might recognise the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The myPolice website has grown to 15 blogs throughout the state which contain regular updates from local police about matters of interest to the community. More myPolice blogs will go online in the coming months.
Online crime maps and statistics are now available in great detail on the QPS website. One aim is for users to become familiar with their area and engage in appropriate crime prevention strategies, partnering with police to ensure a safer community.
I am immensely proud of the work the men and women of the QPS do, and of the support we receive from the general community and other important stakeholders.

Break and enter arrests - Nerang

Two men have been charged in relation to the break and enter of an auto accessories retail store at Nerang in the early hours of this morning.

Just after 1am a security patrol responded to an alarm at the Spencer Road premises. The security guard observed offenders on the site and called police.

Police attended and cordoned the area. A police dog and his handler entered the premises.

One of the men attempted to flee and was detained by the police dog. He sustained a minor bite to his ankle. The second offender surrendered to police without incident.

A 41-year-old man from no fixed place of abode and a 44-year-old man from Red Hill have been co-jointly charged with enter premises with intent.

Both men will face Southport Magistrates Court today.

Counterfeit money investigation – Further arrests

Detectives from the South Eastern Region’s Major and Organised Crime Squad are continuing with investigations in relation to the manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit Australian fifty dollar notes across the Gold Coast.

Officers overnight executed a search warrant at a Coombabah address where they located a man wanted in relation to allegedly passing of a number of counterfeit fifty dollar notes at various businesses on the Gold Coast. Officers also located a small quantity of drugs and a drug utensil.

A 29-year-old Coombabah man has been charged with four counts of passing counterfeit currency, possession of a dangerous drug and possession of a drug utensil.

He is expected to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court this morning.

Detectives from the Major and Organised Crime Squad are continuing with their investigations but want to remind business owners and small retail outlets of the continued presence of these notes on the Gold Coast and to be wary of large notes being used to purchase low value items.

While investigations are continuing, police are requesting anyone with information concerning the manufacturing and distribution of these notes to contact Crime Stoppers.

Fatality Free Friday

Acting Assistant Commissioner Alistair Dawson and Acting Chief Superintendent Andy Morrow from the State Traffic Support Branch were on hand today to raise road safety awareness on Fatality Free Friday (FFF).

Along with Craig Lowndes, they urged drivers to stay safe on the roads today and always.

The event took place in the Queen Street mall where 1400 pairs of empty shoes were laid out to represent the number of people killed on Australian Roads each year.

Additionally, an inflatable car was covered in pledges from the community as show of solidarity in increasing road safety awareness.

The current Queensland road toll stands at 128 which is 18 more than this time last year.
