CRIME ALERT

Posted on 23:03 by Unknown

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2011

The following crime alert was issued to Oxenford NHW by their Police Liaison Officer but neighbouring suburbs should take note as well - just be aware if  something doesn't feel right it probably isn't - make a note of suspicious activity and report it.

Three homes (so far) were broken into yesterday (19.12.2011) in Regatta Waters

In all of the offences the offender has jemmied or broken down the front door. The offender has then stolen cash, jewellery, electrical items.

The offenders have also stolen Christmas gifts.

We need residents to keep and eye out for strangers etc. and call Coomera Police 5519 5555 if they see anything.

Crime Alert - 30/11/2011

Posted on 00:18 by Unknown
Stealing from vehicles at car parks of Wet-n-Wild & Movie World
We have had a recent rise in the number of vehicles being broken into whilst parked in the car park of Wet-n-Wild & Movie World off Entertainment Road in Oxenford.

Thieves are targeting items of value left in vehicles.

We request that you secure your vehicle;  do not leave items of value in your vehicle.  If you have to leave items of value in your vehicle please secure the items out of sight and out of temptation such as in the boot.  This advice is important especially if you visit any of the Theme Parks on the Gold Coast.

We need your help in reporting suspicious behaviour & vehicles that may help us identify offenders responsible for recent offences.  If you find behaviour, vehicles or persons that you feel are suspicious - without putting yourself in danger, record the registration number and a description or even discretely take a photograph of the person(s) & or vehicle(s) with your 'phone.  You can then email the photo and details to DCPC.Coomera@police.qld.gov.au.  If you feel that they are suspected of involvement in a crime at that time ring 131 444, if you have information and you are sure they are or have just committed a crime please ring police via Tripple Zero (000).

SCAMMERS at work in Willow Vale

Posted on 21:31 by Unknown
Just thought I should let you know so you can pass on to neighbourhood watchers.
I was home yesterday when a man approached asking if I would like my driveway sealed as
‘they had some left over” from a job down the road.

From past experience when I lived at Yatala, I know that these guys are scammers.
They give you ‘a good deal on the bitumen’ and then the first lot of rain, the road disappears
and you can just lift it off with your hand.

Please warn any neighbours not to use them.  They will waste their money.
Thanks

POLICE RESPONSE TIMES - HOW CAN YOU HELP

Posted on 02:19 by Unknown
Some serious crimes cannot be reported directly to police link. If you ring police link about such a crime the staff at police link will request police to attend or that you attend a police station to report the matter.

We also do not want you to feel that you are wasting police time by reporting a crime to police. By ringing 131444 direct you are saving police time.   Also if you do not report a crime, police will not be aware of where crimes are being committed.  In order for our patrols to be effective in preventing crime and catching offenders, we need to know where and when to perform our patrols.  Reported crime assists in planning police patrols and is used to warn other residents of crime patterns in their area.

Remember if a crime is in progress ring 000 – or a serious crime has just occurred such as armed robbery ring 000.  For non urgent matters ring 131444.

Speed
Q: How do I know that the speed detection device is accurate?
The testing and accuracy calibration of speed detection devices is in compliance with the relevant Australian Standard and the manufacturers guidelines conducted on a yearly basis. Q: What are the current penalties for speeding?
Current penalties for speeding are:
  • Less than 13 km/h over the speed limit: $A133 + 1 demerit point.
  • At least 13 km/h but not more than 20 km/h over the speed limit: $A200 + 3 demerit points.
  • More than 20 km/h but not more than 30 km/h over the speed limit: $A333 + 4 demerit points.

What is microdot technology?

Posted on 04:39 by Unknown

Microdots are an easy and modern way of marking property for identification. Microdots are micro-labels, about the size of a grain of sand, which are engraved with a unique PIN (Personal Identification Number). The dots are barely visible to the naked eye and can easily be applied to any household items of value such as televisions, DVD players and cameras.
Where can I buy microdot kits? Microdot kits are available via the internet and are available at your local PCYC

Queensland Parliament e-petition for a new Police Station at Ormeau

Posted on 02:38 by Unknown

Our local State member, Margaret Keech MP, is sponsoring a petition to construct a new police station at Ormeau. A new police station would improve available police response in the Coomera-Beenleigh area.

You may not be aware, but the Coomera Division (which includes the Oxenford NHW area) covers from

the Helensvale Westfield Shopping Centre north to the Pimpama River and from Mt Tamborine to the Broadwater. The next police station north of the Pimpama River is Beenleigh.

A police station at Ormeau would reduce the size of the Coomera Police Division, providing more

officers to the Oxenford, Helensvale, Coomera area and a faster response in emergencies.

Anyone who is a Queensland resident can sign a Queensland Parliament E-petition, not just residents

in the area. If you wish to support the e-petition, click on the link to the e-petition webpage.

Gold Coast schools on abduction alert

Posted on 02:51 by Unknown

A comfit of a man who allegedly tried to abduct a girl in Surfers Paradise on Tuesday. The image was distributed to police but not made public.
GOLD COAST schools have been placed on full abduction alert.
The alert has been sent to state and independent schools across the city and parents have been advised in writing of the potential danger.
Teacher supervision has increased and security guards have been hired to shadow school buses after multiple reports of children being stalked by strangers.
It follows a warning to parents by Premier Anna Bligh yesterday to remain vigilant.
The Premier said she had been advised by the Queensland Police Service that there had not been an increase in attempted abductions, but still urged parents to be cautious.
The unprecedented security precaution comes after the attempted abduction of an eight-year-old girl on Tuesday.
The girl had got off her bus at the corner of the Gold Coast Highway and Remembrance Drive when she was grabbed by a man who tried to force her into his car.
The girl said she escaped by kicking the man in the genitals and running off. A comfit of the alleged abductor was distributed to police but not made public.
The attack was the third attempted abduction in three weeks. The others were at Kingscliff on October 9 and Casuarina on October 16.
Police are also investigating reports of a man acting suspiciously towards a 10-year-old girl at Currumbin Waters on Thursday.

GOLD COAST HONOURS FALLEN OFFICERS

Posted on 23:40 by Unknown
About 100 people attended a candlelight vigil outside the Gold Coast's Coomera District headquarters last night, four months after Det Senior Constable Leeding was fatally injured during a tavern hold-up on the Gold Coast on May 29.THE Gold Coast's police community has paid tribute to slain detective Damian Leeding on the eve of National Police Remembrance Day.
Queensland Police Sergeant Dan Stiller, killed in a freak accident while leading a convoy of vehicles in central Queensland in December 2010, was also remembered.
Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Wilson said last night's vigil was an important event for Gold Coast police.
"Detective Senior Constable Leeding was a part of this community, he was starting as one of the new detectives that opened the Coomera detective office 18 months ago and he was protecting his community where he lived (when he died)," Mr Wilson said.

Det Sen Const Leeding and Sgt Stiller were the only police in Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and Papua New Guinea to lose their lives while on the job last year, Mr Wilson said.

In a double blow to Queensland's police service, both officers left behind wives who are also police officers.
Sonya Leeding, widow of Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding, attended last night's vigil and, accompanied by family members, laid an enclosed torch flame to symbolise the flame of life.
Memorial plaques for both officers will be added to the National Police Memorial in Canberra.

Official National Police Remembrance Day events will take place in Coolangatta and Logan today.

QLD POLICE DOGS

Posted on 17:19 by Unknown
A Queensland Police Service (QPS) General Purpose Dog is trained to perform multiple functions which include obedience and agility exercises to build partnership skills. These are important functions as handlers must maintain control over their dogs at all times.

General purpose dogs skills are used in many situations such as tracking (following a person's scent) to find offenders and missing people if they are moving on foot. They are equipped with an excellent sense of smell making them invaluable for searching buildings, enclosed areas and bushland. Here the dog searches for scent drifting in the air and follows it to locate a person. Their sense of smell is also used for searching an area for recently discarded property or evidence. Other duties include assisting with the control of crowds which may threaten the safety of the general public.

BE AWARE

Posted on 02:06 by Unknown
Just received an email from  Oxenford NHW  - one of their residents received a call this week from someone purporting to be from the Oxenford Community Centre. The caller asked  details about   the person's age, partner's age, if they worked full time and if they owned their house.

The person answered these questions and only afterwards thought that perhaps all was not  'legit' - the person now feels that this  could be a scam to see if they were  home during the day. The person in question lives alone and is now quite concerned.

Please - never reveal personal identifying information over the telephone about yourself unless YOU initiated the telephone call. It would be appreciated if you could pass on this information through your networks.

HOONS - HOW TO REPORT THEM

Posted on 03:00 by Unknown
We would like to encourage all  Willow Vale  residents to use the 13HOON (134666) hotline to report drivers performing dangerous, reckless or anti-social behaviour on our roads.
You may be wondering what type of activities you can report to 13HOON. Well, the term ‘hooning’ is used to describe ‘activity’ such as  drivers performing donuts, drifting, fishtails, revving of engines, screeching brakes, skidding, burn outs, time trials/street racing and rolling road blocks.

Hooning is dangerous because, even performed at low speeds; it may cause the driver to lose control of their vehicle, leave the road and collide with a fixed object (such as your car or garden wall) or a pedestrian. The speeds associated with street racing coupled with driver inexperience can lead to fatalities.

So, how can you help to end honing on our streets? Well, to report a hooning offence, you must first observe the behaviour and note details such as vehicle registration, vehicle characteristics, time and location of the illegal activity and a description of the behaviour. If you can do so safely and inconspicuously, images or video footage taken with your mobile are very useful to Police.

When you call 13HOON, a trained call taker will record your details and relay the information to police for follow up. For hooning incidents currently underway and where there is no immediate danger to anyone by having police attend, your information will be forwarded to a Police Communications Centre to task police for response.

However, if anyone is in immediate danger or it is a life-threatening situation, please call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

The information you provide to 13HOON is relayed to police for further investigation. This allows police to locate hooning hotspots and take action to prevent it reoccurring.

Under current anti-hoon laws police can impound a vehicle for 48 hours after a first repeat offence, up to three months for a second repeat offence, or permanently for a third repeat offence.

SCAMS - THEY'RE EVERYWHERE

Posted on 02:37 by Unknown
Have you been scammed?  Unfortunately, many people are scammed every year in Australia. While it is very difficult to track down the person or group who has scammed you, there are some steps you can take straight away to reduce the damage. You may also be a target for a ‘follow-up’ scam, so you need to take action to stop the scammers succeeding again.

If you suspect or you know that you have been scammed, you should take the time to report it. By making a report to the appropriate government agency, you help them identify scammers and warn other people about the swindle.

You should also warn your friends and family so they do not become a victim as well. Let your local Neighbourhod Watch group know too so they can alert residents   through their email database, newsletters, at their meetings etc. By sharing your story, you are helping to fight back against the scammers.

You can report the scam online at www.scamwatch.gov.au – once there you can report the scam using their online form. The SCAMWatch website is run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise, avoid and report scams.

You can also call SCAMwatch at the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 795 995. This centre operates from 9am to 5pm weekdays, except public holidays. Call this number if you:

•    cannot find the information you need on the SCAMwatch website
•    have a question or concern
•    are in the process of sending money and are unsure if it is a scam
•    have lost money or have not received goods or services that you paid for
•    are the victim of a scam or are concerned about someone who you think has been scammed
